Be certain before reporting

Australia’s passport office says a reported lost or stolen passport is cancelled. You cannot use it again if it later turns up. Check your belongings and any likely lost-property desk promptly, then report the loss to the office.

If it was stolen

The Australian instructions say to report overseas theft to local police and keep the report details. Tell the embassy what happened and ask which documents you need for a new application. Avoid sending identity documents to a telephone number found in an unverified message.

Plan around the Madrid sessions

The passport contact page lists a midday break. If you need a routine appointment, call in a published session and state your travel date. The after-hours consular centre is for urgent circumstances, not a shortcut to a routine passport appointment.

Before you call

  • Your passport number or a copy, if available.
  • Where and when the passport was lost or stolen.
  • Your intended departure date and full route.
  • Your local address, return number and any police report.

Calling from another country

For an ordinary international number, copy the full number shown above. The plus sign replaces the international access prefix when your phone accepts it. Do not add another country code to a number that already starts with +.

Check the hours attached to the line you need. A listed office address does not mean walk-in access is available. If no one answers, read the official contact page for an online enquiry route before trying another department.
