An urgent consular enquiry
Tell the operator where the Australian citizen is and what has happened. If you are calling for someone else, give your relationship to them and your own return contact number. Do not assume the operator can locate a traveller from a name alone.
Passport enquiries from overseas
The Australian Passport Office sends ordinary overseas passport questions to the nearest embassy or consulate. Its urgent guidance gives the Consular Emergency Centre for qualifying urgent circumstances. Use the local mission page for a routine appointment or application question.
The Australian domestic number
DFAT separately lists 1300 555 135 for callers within Australia. This directory uses the full +61 geographic number for international calls. Do not add +61 to the 1300 number and assume it will work from another country.
Before you call
- Your nationality and the city you are in.
- The service you need and any existing reference number.
- Your travel date, if a deadline affects your enquiry.
- A return phone number and an email address you can access.
Calling from another country
For an ordinary international number, copy the full number shown above. The plus sign replaces the international access prefix when your phone accepts it. Do not add another country code to a number that already starts with +.
Check the hours attached to the line you need. A listed office address does not mean walk-in access is available. If no one answers, read the official contact page for an online enquiry route before trying another department.
