Routine questions use the landline
Use the general number for application status, visa questions and ordinary service information. The consulate asks callers not to use its urgent mobile for these matters. Have the application reference ready so you can describe the request in a few sentences.
When the mobile is appropriate
The published examples include a death or serious illness in the immediate family. Say what has happened and where the affected person is. The officer may need documents, so ask how to send them through the office’s own channels.
Calling a Scottish office from abroad
The international number starts with +44 131. If you have a saved domestic number beginning 0131, the initial zero is omitted after +44. The same rule applies to the urgent mobile: use the full international form printed above.
Before you call
- Your nationality and the city you are in.
- The service you need and any existing reference number.
- Your travel date, if a deadline affects your enquiry.
- A return phone number and an email address you can access.
Calling from another country
For an ordinary international number, copy the full number shown above. The plus sign replaces the international access prefix when your phone accepts it. Do not add another country code to a number that already starts with +.
Check the hours attached to the line you need. A listed office address does not mean walk-in access is available. If no one answers, read the official contact page for an online enquiry route before trying another department.
