Can You Make Phone Calls With a Data-Only eSIM?

You can make calls over a data-only eSIM using an internet calling service. For someone who uses the same app, a WhatsApp or FaceTime call can use the travel data. To reach a hotel, office or landline through its normal phone number, use an internet service that can call ordinary numbers, or use a separate SIM with voice service.
The eSIM is the format of the SIM. Its plan decides which services you get. A data-only package gives your phone internet access. A voice plan can give you a number, calls and texts according to its terms. Check the plan description before buying, especially if you need to receive a call rather than place one.
Choose the method by who you need to reach
| You need to reach | Use | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Someone on the same calling app | App voice or video over travel data | Both people can sign in and use the app at their locations |
| A normal mobile or landline number | A browser or app service that calls phone numbers | Destination support, per-minute rate and caller ID |
| Someone who needs to call your usual number back | Your home carrier line, or a number service with inbound calling | Roaming, forwarding and incoming call terms |
| A service sending a verification text | The line attached to the number on that account | International SMS delivery and a backup sign-in method |
SayFone travel eSIMs provide mobile data. If you also want to call a phone number, use the separate SayFone web dialer. The person answering a supported mobile or landline can pick up on their usual phone. Check the rate for the country and number type before placing the call. Your eSIM allowance carries the internet traffic, and the calling service charges for the call under its own terms.
Call a hotel or landline from your browser
First test the connection with a web page. Sign in to your calling service and allow microphone access when you are ready to use the dialer. Enter the destination's country code and the phone number in international format. A UK hotel that lists a London number beginning with 020 normally uses +44 20 from abroad. Use the number published by the hotel and check the dialing rule for its country.
Choose a quiet spot with a steady connection. If audio drops on a moving train or inside a building, try a supported Wi-Fi network or move somewhere with better reception. For a phone menu, wait until it asks for an extension and then enter the digits in the call keypad if your service supports it. If you call from your regular iPhone line, see how to enter an extension in the Phone app.
If the hotel needs to return your call, give it a number on which you can receive calls. A browser call does not automatically give you a callback number. Check whether you are using your home line, a number service with incoming calls, or a different agreed contact method.
Keep WhatsApp on the number you already use
When you swap the line that supplies mobile data, your WhatsApp account can stay signed into your usual number. Open the app after switching to travel data and try a message before making a call. If WhatsApp asks you to verify again, you will need access to the number on the account. WhatsApp explains the relationship between your SIM and signed-in account.
An app-to-app call only helps when the person you are calling can use that app. A restaurant's listed landline generally needs a regular phone call. If you are trying to call someone who has no messaging app, see the options for reaching their phone directly.
Know which line the phone's dialer will use
The built-in Phone app normally places a voice call through the line selected for calls. If your home SIM stays active and the travel eSIM supplies data, a call made in the Phone app can still use your home carrier. Apple lists the options for calling and using data with two lines. On a Pixel you can choose a default for calls or have it ask each time.
Carrier Wi-Fi Calling is a different route from a browser call. It uses your existing number and the carrier's billing rules. Some phones and carriers can use another SIM's data for a form of backup calling, but support varies. Confirm the carrier's policy and the status shown on the phone before relying on it abroad. Pick the combination before you leave
Write down which calls you expect to make. A traveler who calls family on WhatsApp and occasionally needs a hotel number can pair prepaid travel data with an internet dialer for those hotel calls. Someone waiting for a call on their home number may need to keep that line active and review roaming charges. If the trip depends on a login code, arrange how to receive SMS abroad before boarding.
