Use the Correct Exit Code
Tanzania's international exit code is 000 from a landline. From a mobile phone, you can use the + prefix instead. Do not use 00 (which is common in many other countries) — Tanzania's landline exit code is specifically 000.
Quick Answer
From Tanzania, dial 000 (or +) then 1, then the 10-digit US number. On a mobile phone, simply dial +1 followed by the area code and 7-digit local number. With Sayfone, calls cost $0.08/min.

DIALING GUIDE
Follow these steps to connect to any landline or mobile number in the United States from Tanzania. The dialing format is the same for both US landlines and mobile phones.
From a Tanzanian landline, dial 000 to signal an international call. From a mobile phone, you can simply press and hold 0 to produce the + symbol, which replaces the exit code.
000 or +
After the exit code, dial 1. This is the international country code for the United States. It routes your call to the US telephone network.
000 + 1 or +1
Every US phone number begins with a 3-digit area code that identifies the region. For example, 212 is New York City, 213 is Los Angeles, 312 is Chicago, and 713 is Houston. You must include the area code even when calling a mobile number.
000 + 1 + 212
Complete the call by dialing the remaining 7 digits of the US phone number. The full sequence from a Tanzanian mobile looks like: +1 212 555 0123.
+1 212 555 0123
Review the full number on your screen to confirm you have the exit code (or +), country code 1, 3-digit area code, and 7-digit local number — 11 digits total after the exit code. Then press the call button.

IMPORTANT RULES
A few key rules to keep in mind so your call connects on the first try.
Tanzania's international exit code is 000 from a landline. From a mobile phone, you can use the + prefix instead. Do not use 00 (which is common in many other countries) — Tanzania's landline exit code is specifically 000.
US phone numbers always require a 3-digit area code, even for mobile numbers. Unlike some countries, there is no separate format for mobiles vs. landlines in the US — both use the same 10-digit structure.
US numbers do not use a trunk prefix (leading 0). If someone gives you a number starting with 1, that is the country code — not a trunk prefix. Dial it as +1 followed by the full 10-digit number.
After dialing 000 (or +), you should enter exactly 11 digits: the country code 1 plus the 10-digit US number (3-digit area code + 7-digit local number). If your digit count is off, the call will not connect.
US toll-free numbers (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833) may not be reachable from international lines or may incur charges from your Tanzanian carrier. Check with your provider before calling these numbers.
TIMING & TIPS
Tanzania is on East Africa Time (EAT, UTC+3) year-round with no daylight saving changes. The US spans multiple time zones from Eastern (UTC−5) to Hawaii (UTC−10), so the time difference ranges from 8 to 13 hours behind Tanzania.
Planning your calls around these time differences helps you reach people at reasonable hours — and can also help you avoid peak-rate periods on traditional carriers.

TROUBLESHOOTING
If your call isn't connecting, check these common problems before trying again.
The most common cause is a missing or incorrect exit code. From a Tanzanian landline you must dial 000 (not 00). From a mobile, use the + prefix. Then verify you've dialed 1 (US country code) followed by exactly 10 digits.
This usually means the area code or local number is wrong. US area codes change over time as overlays are added. Confirm the current area code with the person you're calling, or look it up on the NANPA website.
Traditional IDD calls from Tanzania can suffer from routing issues. For clearer calls, use a browser-based calling service like Sayfone over a stable Wi-Fi or 4G data connection. This bypasses legacy phone-network routing.
Some Tanzanian mobile plans do not include international dialing by default. Contact your carrier (Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo/MIC) to activate IDD service, or bypass the restriction entirely by calling through Sayfone in your browser.
Toll-free numbers (starting with 800, 888, 877, etc.) are often restricted to calls originating within the US. If you need to reach a US business, ask for their direct international number instead.
