Calling about someone overseas

State the country and city where the British citizen is located. Give their full name and a way to reach them if you have one. If you are calling from the UK about someone else, make that clear at the start.

Use local emergency services first when needed

A consular telephone team is not a local police or ambulance dispatch centre. If there is immediate danger, use a local phone to reach the emergency services where the person is located. Contact the consular team about the British citizen’s situation once urgent local help is being arranged.

Keeping a record of the call

Write down any case reference and the next action agreed with the operator. Ask which official channel to use for documents. If you need to call again, give the reference first so the next person can find the earlier enquiry.

Before you call

  • Your nationality and the city you are in.
  • The service you need and any existing reference number.
  • Your travel date, if a deadline affects your enquiry.
  • A return phone number and an email address you can access.

Calling from another country

For an ordinary international number, copy the full number shown above. The plus sign replaces the international access prefix when your phone accepts it. Do not add another country code to a number that already starts with +.

Check the hours attached to the line you need. A listed office address does not mean walk-in access is available. If no one answers, read the official contact page for an online enquiry route before trying another department.
