    DIALING GUIDE

Step-by-Step: Call Colombia from the US

Follow these steps to reach any Colombian landline or mobile number from the United States. Colombia's numbering plan was unified in 2021, so all numbers are now 10 digits.

    • Dial the US exit code

From a US landline or office phone, dial 011 to initiate an international call. From a US mobile phone, you can press and hold 0 or simply dial + instead of 011.

      011 ...
    • Dial Colombia's country code

Enter 57, which is Colombia's ITU-assigned country code. This routes your call to the Colombian telephone network.

      011 57 ...
    • Dial the 10-digit Colombian number

Enter the recipient's full 10-digit number. For landlines, the number starts with 60X (e.g., 601 for Bogotá, 604 for Medellín). For mobiles, the number starts with 3 (e.g., 3XX XXX XXXX). Do not add a leading 0 — that prefix is not used when dialing internationally.

      011 57 601 XXX XXXX (Bogotá landline) or 011 57 3XX XXX XXXX (mobile)
    • Or call with Sayfone

Open Sayfone in your browser, enter the Colombian number with country code +57, and place the call. Calls to Colombia are $0.12/min with transparent per-minute pricing.

    DIALING RULES

Key Rules for Calling Colombia from the US

Colombia modernized its numbering plan in 2021, unifying all numbers to 10 digits. Here's what US callers need to know.

All Colombian numbers are 10 digits

Since the CRC numbering reform completed in late 2021, all Colombian phone numbers — landline and mobile — follow a unified 10-digit format. Old 8-digit landline formats (1-digit area code + 7 digits) no longer work; the '60' prefix was inserted before the original area code digit.

    Landlines start with 60X

Colombian landlines use a 3-digit area code starting with 60, followed by a 7-digit subscriber number. For example, Bogotá is 601, Cali is 602, Medellín is 604, and Barranquilla is 605. Always include the full area code when dialing from abroad.

    Mobiles start with 3

Colombian mobile numbers are 10 digits long and start with 3 (e.g., 3XX XXX XXXX). No separate area code is needed — the 10-digit number includes all routing information. Colombia supports mobile number portability, so the initial 3XX prefix may not reflect the current carrier.

    Drop any leading 0

If you have a Colombian number that starts with 0 (used for domestic long-distance dialing historically), remove it before adding the country code +57. The 0 prefix is not part of the international format.

Use + or 011 from the US

The US international exit code is 011. On a mobile phone, the + sign (press and hold 0) replaces 011 and works universally. Both 011 57 and +57 route to Colombia identically.

Some special numbers may not work internationally

Colombian toll-free numbers (e.g., 01-800 numbers) and emergency numbers (123) are domestic-only and generally cannot be reached from outside Colombia.

    TIMING & TIPS

Best Times to Call Colombia from the US

Colombia uses a single time zone (COT, UTC−5) year-round with no daylight saving time. The US spans multiple time zones and observes DST in most states, so the offset between the US and Colombia shifts seasonally.

9:00 AM – 5:00 PM COTOverlaps fully with ET in winter; 10 AM–6 PM ET in summer

    Calling tips

    • Colombia does not observe daylight saving time, so the offset with the US East Coast changes twice a year: same time in winter (EST), 1 hour behind in summer (EDT).
    • For US West Coast callers (PT), Colombia is 2 hours ahead during PDT and 3 hours ahead during PST.
    • Avoid calling during Colombian lunch (12:00–2:00 PM COT) for business calls, as many offices take a longer midday break.
    • Call via Sayfone from your browser at $0.12/min — no app download needed.

    Business etiquette

    • Greetings in Spanish are appreciated. Start with 'Buenos días' (morning), 'Buenas tardes' (afternoon), or 'Buenas noches' (evening).
    • Colombian business culture values personal relationships — expect some social conversation before getting to business topics.
    • If calling a business, address the person formally with 'Señor' or 'Señora' unless invited to use first names.

    TROUBLESHOOTING

Common Issues Calling Colombia from the US

If your call to Colombia isn't connecting, check these common issues before trying again.

Call won't connect — wrong number length

Colombian numbers must be exactly 10 digits after the country code +57. If you're using an old 8-digit landline format, add '60' before the single-digit area code (e.g., Bogotá 1 → 601). The old format stopped working after November 2021.

    Forgot the exit code

Calls from US landlines require 011 before the country code 57. From a mobile phone, use + instead. Without the exit code, your call will fail or route incorrectly.

    Included a leading 0

If the Colombian number you were given starts with 0, drop it. The 0 prefix was used for domestic long-distance calls and is not part of the international number format.

Calling a toll-free or special number

Colombian toll-free numbers (01-800 format) and emergency services (123) are domestic-only. Some special numbers may not work when dialed internationally.

    Poor audio or dropped call

If using a browser-based service like Sayfone, ensure you have a stable internet connection. Close bandwidth-heavy applications and use a wired connection or strong Wi-Fi when possible.
