DIALING STEPS
Follow these steps to reach a Vietnam landline or mobile number from Japan.
Start by dialing 010, Japan's international dialing prefix. This signals your phone to connect internationally.
010
Dial +84, Vietnam's country code. You may see this written as 0084 on some systems, but +84 is standard.
010 + 84
Enter the area code for your destination city. For Hanoi landlines, use 24; for Ho Chi Minh City landlines, use 28. Mobile numbers may begin with 9xx.
010 + 84 + 24 (Hanoi)
Enter the remaining subscriber number. Hanoi landlines typically have 8 digits after the area code; mobile numbers are usually 10 digits total after the country code.
010 + 84 + 24 + 1234567 = 010-84-24-1234567

RULES & FORMATS
Understand Vietnam's numbering structure, area code rules, and special formatting requirements when calling from Japan.
When calling a Vietnam landline from Japan, you must include the area code. Omitting it will result in a failed call. Area codes range from 2–3 digits.
Vietnam mobile numbers begin with 9 (or sometimes 3 or 8) followed by 8 digits. Examples: 0912345678 (domestic), +84912345678 (international). When dialing internationally, drop the leading 0 from the mobile number.
Domestic Vietnam numbers often start with 0. When dialing from Japan, omit this 0 and replace it with the country code +84.
After +84, expect 8–10 digits depending on whether you are calling a landline (area code + subscriber number) or a mobile (10 digits total).

TROUBLESHOOTING
Resolve connection problems, number-format errors, and understand limitations when calling Vietnam from Japan.
Check that you dialed 010 (Japan's exit code) first, then +84 (Vietnam country code), then the complete area code and number. Verify the number is a valid Vietnam landline or mobile format. If using a land phone, ensure international calling is enabled on your account.
Vietnam's area codes vary by region; confirm you used the correct code (24 for Hanoi, 28 for Ho Chi Minh City, etc.). If dialing a mobile, ensure it starts with 9 and has 10 digits total after the country code.
International calls can sometimes experience latency or echo. Try calling again at a different time, or ask your contact to reduce background noise. Using a headset or speaker phone may improve clarity.
Some Vietnam numbers—such as emergency services (113, 114), toll-free lines, or premium services—may not connect from Japan. Verify the number is a standard residential or business landline or mobile.
